SPLITROOT - Launch Discussion and Planned Update
HI there!
So SPLITROOT is a game that just kind of happened.
It started out with me being a volunteer for the Global Game Jam's Galway site. On the second day, I had a thought. I have a whole weekend surrounded by other talented developers. Why DON'T I make a game? Something super tiny. Like a minimalist mobile game. Android Unity development IS something I've been intrigued about, but with my full time commitments to my other work, I haven't had the time to sit down and play around with other projects. If only I had a whole weekend surrounded by other talented developers... WAIT!
Sooo, I sat down for day 2 and 3 of the Global Game Jam, and what came out of it was SPLITROOT. A minimalist Android game where you play as a root, collecting gems and spreading more roots out.
While the deadline meant that I didn't get to iron out all the bugs, there are still a bunch of things I plan on refining and fixing up. It doesn't play EXACTLY as I want. I didn't wish for it to be too challenging, but rather more relaxing than anything. In fact, what I had in mind was more of a dopamine machine similar to that of Vampire Survivors or something! Thing is, I only really had the time to get the base mechanics down, with zero time to focus on balancing or game feel. And so, the only way I could get it to feel compelling with the time I had was to make it more challenging. That will all be reworked though.
So, here's a list of what I have planned:
- Fix all the major bugs, of course.
- An entire rebalance of the game.
- Rework the camera system.
- Add more visual flare.
- Add sound effects.
All in all, I think the experience was really positive! I got to learn a lot about multi-platform development, and how Android development works. I know a game like this is completely out of left field for me, but it's something I'm interested in doing a bit more of, perhaps as a completely separate thing to the ENIGMA Trilogy.
Anyway, thanks for reading!
